You've just entered your first UK photographic salon and — thrillingly — one of your images got accepted. Now what? Where do you go from here? Do you enter every BPE salon in the calendar, or pace yourself? How long will it take to earn that first BPE1★? This post is the roadmap I wish I'd had at the start.
Set the goalpost: what BPE1★ looks like
BPE1★ is the first BPE crown and requires 25 acceptances across the British Photographic Exhibitions circuit. That's it — no minimum salon count, no country or section requirement. Just 25 individual "accepted" ticks on your running total.
Twenty-five sounds like a lot when you're staring at your first acceptance. It stops looking so daunting once you see the maths: the BPE circuit runs 15+ affiliated exhibitions per year, most offer 3–5 sections, and you can enter up to 4 images per section. A single well-received image can rack up 5+ acceptances in a year without breaking a sweat.
The first-year cadence
Trying to enter every BPE salon in your first year is a recipe for burnout, spiralling entry fees, and a portfolio you haven't had time to strengthen. Instead, aim for 4–6 salons spread across the calendar. This gives you:
- Enough entries to build a real acceptance base (target: 15–30 acceptances).
- Feedback loops — you'll see which of your images consistently get in and which don't.
- Room in your budget (BPE entry fees typically run £10–£20 per salon).
- Time between deadlines to actually shoot new work.
Which BPE salons to prioritise as a beginner
Every BPE salon carries the same "one acceptance = one BPE point" weighting, so no salon is more valuable than any other on paper. But some are more beginner-friendly than others, either because of section variety, judging style, or lower typical entry standards.
Look for salons that publish full acceptance and award reports — these help you calibrate what "getting in" actually means at each one. And favour salons with multiple sections (Open Colour, Open Monochrome, Nature, Creative, Portrait, Scapes, Themed) — each section is a separate acceptance opportunity for the same set of images.
Prepare a "core set" of 6–10 images
New photographers often try to enter their newest, most exciting shots — the ones from last weekend's outing. Experienced salon-chasers do the opposite: they build a small core set of 6–10 proven images and enter them repeatedly across salons.
Your core set should include:
- Two Open Colour images with strong composition and clear subjects.
- Two Open Monochrome images — usually a re-treated version of a colour shot works if the original is monochrome-friendly.
- One or two Nature shots if you have them (birds, wildlife, macro).
- One or two Creative / conceptual images for genre-specific sections.
The point is consistency. An image that got into three salons last year will probably get into another three this year. Ride your winners.
Reading a salon prospectus
Every BPE salon publishes a Conditions of Entry (COE) document — sometimes a PDF, sometimes a page on the salon's website. Before entering, skim the COE for:
- Section list — which categories are open (Open Colour, Nature, etc.) and how they're defined.
- Image specs — usually 1600px on the longest edge, sRGB, JPEG, sub-2MB, but always confirm.
- Entry limits — usually 4 per section, but a few salons cap at 3.
- Closing date and judging date — put both in your calendar; the results email lands soon after judging.
- Award structure — Gold Medals, Ribbons, Judge's Choice etc. Great for celebration, but every award is still just one acceptance for BPE points.
What to expect from your first six months
A realistic beginner trajectory looks something like this:
- Salon 1 — 1 or 2 acceptances. You're finding your feet.
- Salon 2 — 3–5 acceptances. You've swapped out the weaker images and re-entered your successes.
- Salon 3 — 4–7 acceptances. You've added a fresh image or two and the core set is settling.
- Salons 4–6 — 5–10 acceptances each. You're in a rhythm.
Add those up and you're comfortably at BPE1★ inside 12 months — often inside 8 or 9.
Track everything from day one
The single mistake that costs beginners weeks of frustration later is not logging acceptances as they come in. Every salon emails results, but those emails vanish into your inbox and by month six you can't reliably say which images have been accepted where.
When you eventually apply for BPE1★, you need to list every acceptance with the salon, year, image title and section. The awards officers verify against the salon records — so accuracy matters.

Common first-year mistakes
- Entering every salon at once. You'll burn through your entry-fee budget and won't have time to breathe between deadlines. Pick 4–6, do them well.
- Chasing new images instead of new salons. Your existing good images will keep earning points. New photos won't outperform proven ones just because they're new.
- Treating rejections personally. Section judging is subjective and panels vary. An image rejected at one salon can be a Gold Medal winner at the next. Enter, re-enter, move on.
- Skipping the smaller regional salons. A BPE point from a small salon looks identical to one from the biggest name on the circuit. The smaller salons are often more beginner-friendly.
