If you've just started entering UK salons and keep seeing photographers list BPE1★, BPE3★ or ABPE after their names, this guide is for you. The British Photographic Exhibitions crown scheme is one of the simplest, most rewarding recognition systems in UK photography — but it can be a bit opaque from the outside. This post breaks down exactly what BPE is, how to earn crowns, and how to track your progress without drowning in spreadsheets.
What is the BPE Crown Scheme?
The BPE circuit is managed by the British Photographic Exhibitions body — a coalition of around 15 regional, club-run exhibitions across the UK. Each of these exhibitions is a nationally-recognised photographic salon, and every acceptance you earn at one contributes to a single running total: your BPE points.
Once your point total crosses certain thresholds, you're eligible to apply for a BPE crown — a certification you can list after your name and use in artist statements. Crowns are free to apply for once you qualify.
How points work
Each time one of your photographs is accepted into a qualifying BPE member exhibition, you earn one point. Different sections in the same salon each count separately — so if the same image is accepted in both Colour and Monochrome sections of the same exhibition, that's two points. The scheme rewards volume across genres, sections and years, not any single "breakthrough" image.
The crown milestones
- BPE1★ — 25 acceptances
- BPE2★ — 50 acceptances
- BPE3★ — 100 acceptances
- BPE4★ — 200 acceptances
- BPE5★ — 300 acceptances
Past BPE5, dedicated photographers can pursue further distinctions — the ABPE (Associateship) and FBPE (Fellowship) — which involve panel submissions judged on portfolio coherence rather than raw acceptance counts.
How to get started
1. Find qualifying exhibitions
Start with the official BPE affiliated list — around 15 salons including Clay Cross National, Southport National, Vale of Evesham, Basingstoke, South Birmingham, Robin Hood Open, Neath & District, Rushden Open, Winchester National, Beyond Group, Dingwall National, Shrewsbury Open, Midland Monochrome, Frome Salon and Great Western Exhibition. Each runs annually with published open and close dates.
2. Review the rules for each salon
Most BPE salons accept up to 4 images per section, across a mix of open and genre-specific categories — Colour, Monochrome, Nature, Creative, Portrait, Scapes, and so on. Entry fees typically cover the cost of running the exhibition and paying judges. Read each salon's individual conditions of entry (COE) — image dimensions, accepted file formats and copyright terms vary a little from salon to salon.
3. Enter, and enter regularly
There's no fast track. Consistency beats brilliance in the BPE crown scheme — a photographer who enters 10 salons a year with a well-curated set of 8 strong images will out-crown someone who enters one salon per year with a portfolio of 40 mixed-quality images. Aim to keep entering across the whole calendar.
4. Track your progress rigorously
This is the step where most photographers lose sight of where they stand. You need to know, at any moment, how many acceptances you have — per exhibition, per year, per image, per section — so you can (a) know when you're close to the next crown, (b) apply for the crown without hunting through email confirmations, and (c) spot which sections are your strongest.

5. Apply when you hit a milestone
Once your acceptance count crosses a crown threshold, contact the BPE Awards Officers. They'll send you an application form to complete — you list your accepted images per exhibition per year, they verify against the salon records, and your certificate is dispatched. There's no fee for the crown itself.
A realistic timeline
A photographer entering 4–6 BPE salons a year with a portfolio of 8–12 competition-ready images can typically reach BPE1★within their first full year. BPE3★ is a two-to-three year goal for a committed hobbyist; BPE5★ is closer to a five-year journey. Those numbers move faster once you start entering more sections per salon and building a stronger set of "reliable" images.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Losing track of which images have been accepted where. If you can't recall whether "Autumn Bridge" got into last year's Robin Hood Open, you'll enter the same image again next year (fine — but if you also can't tell the awards officer, you'll struggle at application time).
- Only entering the "big" salons. The smaller, regional BPE salons are just as valuable point-for-point. Skipping them because they feel less prestigious slows you down.
- Chasing awards, not acceptances. A Gold Medal is wonderful, but it still counts as one acceptance towards your crown. Consistency of acceptance is what earns crowns; awards just make the journey more satisfying.
